For the first time since 1993, Seton Hall has won the Big East Tournament! In a back and forth affair, the Pirates came out on top after a big time drive by Isaiah Whitehead (converted a three-point play with less than 20 seconds to go) and a key stop on Ryan Arcidiacano’s triple at the end of regulation.
Whitehead is our Top DOG of the Night with 26 points (11-21 shooting) & 3 dimes but contributions from Derrick Gordon (10 points), Desi Rodriguez (10 points), Ismael Sanogo (8 points, 8 boards), and Angel Delgado (8 points, 6 boards) cannot be overlooked.
Though Villanova rebounded from a 29-40 deficit to start the second half, they were the victims of controversial no-call in the waning moments. After rebounding an initial miss from Kris Jenkins (23 points) with under 10 seconds to go, Josh Hart appeared to have gotten whacked on the arm on his put back attempt.
Though the no-call will be discussed, the W is a tremendous accomplishment for Coach Kevin Willard and the Pirates.
REMEMBER: THEY WERE PICKED TO FINISH LAST IN THE CONFERENCE.
With a star like Whitehead (Big East MOP) leading the way, Seton Hall is an early sleeper team to make noise in the Big Dance. Heading to the tournament for the first time since 2006, they’re long overdue.
