There’s increasing speculation that the 2015-16 NBA season will be the final chapter of Kobe Bryant’s illustrious career. After battling serious injuries on a struggling Lakers squad, Kobe just might hang it up in April 2016. So until we are explicitly told otherwise, we are treating the next year as sort of a “farewell” for one of the most incredible players to ever grace the hardwood.

So on this Memory Lane Monday, we take a look back at one of Kobe’s most underrated performances: his 65-point outing v. the Portland Trail Blazers on March 16, 2007. Normally, a 65-point game is not classified as “underrated” but we’re also talking about a guy who’s scored 81 points in a single game, the most overwhelmingly impressive scoring display in the modern era.

Kobe’s night was even more special once you put in in perspective…the 65 points on March 16th kicked off a stretch in which he scored 50 or more in 4 STRAIGHT GAMES! The Timberwolves got smoked for 50 on March 18th, The Grizz could not contain Kobe on March 22nd as he got off for 60 and the Hornets knew they were trouble when the Mamba rolled into town on March 23rd…Bryant scored another 50 points.

Kobe’s 2007 explosion cemented himself probably out him in the top 10 of the greatest scorers in NBA history.

The 81-point game is stuff of legend but scoring 50+ in four consecutive games is a greater feat, considering all of those teams catered their entire game plan around containing Kobe and still could not keep him at bay. His showing v. the Blazers had it all: his patented fallaway jumpers, devastating finishes in the lane and countless clutch buckets.

Plus, there are cameos by Lamar Odom, Brandon Roy, and the infamous Kwame Brown! Take a look:

Kobe single-handedly defeating teams was commonplace during the mid-2000s. Before the Lakers were championship contenders, their fate rested on the shoulders of their fearless leader. And he got the job done more often than not!

So Kobe, if you’re reading this, please give us at least ONE more of these memorable moments during the upcoming season. You better believe the Black Mamba will strike a few more times before it is all said and done.
