Our inaugural UnderDOG of the week goes out to none other than Cleveland Cavaliers guard, Matthew Dellavedova. Delly was spectacular as he helped the Cavs to a Game 2 victory at Oracle Arena. He hounded the greatest shooter in league history (no hyperbole), Stephen Curry, to 0-8 shooting and 4 turnovers when matched up with him.
Although he posted modest numbers (9 points, 5 boards, 3 steal), his will to win was contagious. Dellavedova got after it defensively, knocked down the go-ahead free throws in overtime and even forced Curry into an airball that would have tied the game. Seriously, when is the last time someone frustrated Curry to the point where he was “thrown off?” Even if Steph got loose on screens, Delly would recover quick enough to contest.
As LeBron James put it, Dellavedova did everything for Cleveland to pull out the victory.
With Kyrie Irving sidelined for the remainder of the Finals, Delly needs to showcase his “ferocious” mentality at all times. It’s safe to say the former undrafted standout (from St. Mary’s) will be counted on heavily going forward.
LeBron is the unquestioned leader on the Cavs but for them to pull off the most unlikely upset in Finals history, Delly and co. have to keep their confidence high at all times.
