Cliff Alexander (Freshman, Kansas, @HumbleKid_2)
Power Forward/6’9/240/Age: 19
Product of…Curie HS (Chicago, IL)
7.1 points/game, 5.3 rebounds/game, 0.4 assists/game
As a highly-touted 5-star prospect, big Cliff Alexander was set to overpower guys at the collegiate level. But after an erratic year that ended with him sitting out the final 8 games due to eligibility concerns, he has an uphill battle to secure a first-round spot. GMs usually salivate over players that have Cliff’s athleticism and penchant for crashing the glass.
Giving a guaranteed contract to a player who probably should have stayed in school another year, however, is enough cause to ward them off. Being selected in the first or second round will not determine Cliff’s fate. If he interviews well, shows tireless effort and works to develop a 15-footer, someone will DEFINITELY take a leap of faith.
-Makes up for “lack” of size with very good athleticism and physical tools; long arms (7’2 wingspan)
-Good shot blocker for a power forward of his stature a la Terrence Jones
-Projects as a high-caliber “catch and finish” player down the road
-Below average footwork; very impatient when making moves in the lane
-Forces the issue far too often; has to let the offense come to him
-Undersized power forward without an advanced NBA skill set; very raw at this stage
D.O.G. Status: Alexander’s youth and impressive athleticism might be enough for a team to guarantee him a first-round contract. However, he needs to vastly polish his footwork, face up game and defense to eventually turn into an indispensable talent.
NBA Comparison: JJ Hickson
