UVA’s Justin Anderson features many traits of an NBA role player. He has a league-ready frame, does not take plays off and is an improving shooter from outside. With the Cavaliers, he was asked to stop the opposition’s top perimeter threat and happily obliged.
Right now, Anderson’s offensive repertoire is pretty basic; scores mainly off of straight line drives, transition and the three ball. For him to be a sure fire NBA talent and rotational presence, he needs to display his one-on-one defense in workouts. That side of the ball, along with a more steady jumper, will be the difference.
-Powerful lefty, incredible athlete; will challenge for the best vertical leap in this year’s combine
-Very adaptable on defense; frequently guarded 1s, 2s and 3s
-Solid slasher; runs the floor well in transition
-While vastly improved (45% from 3 as a JR.), still a shaky jump shooter; can he adjust to the NBA line?
-Neither a playmaker or shot creator right now; with his big body, needs to become aggressive operating in the post
-Very average finisher at the rim
D.O.G. Status: Truth be told, there a LOT of guys with Justin Anderson’s skill set floating around. However, not many of them possess the same work ethic and passion for the game. If Anderson continues to improve on an upward track, he will be a great value pick in the late first round.
