Small Forward/6’7/200/Age: 19

Quick Stats

9.3 points/game, 5 rebounds/game, 0.8 assists/game

Kelly Oubre Jr.’s freshman season at Kansas was decent at best. He showed brief flashes of his immense potential as a slasher, shooter, and defender but never put all of it together. The 6’7 lefty has ideal size to play on the perimeter in the NBA and has, perhaps, the highest potential of any wing player in this class.

While Oubre Jr.’s physical tools are impressive, his overall game is a huge work in progress. Developing an aggressive mentality, playing hard on every possession, and committing to defense are all areas of improvement. He’s definitely an “upside” pick similar to players like Noah Vonleh and Zach LaVine last season. Right now, Oubre Jr. is projected to be a late-lottery to mid-first round pick.

Strengths:

-Good size and athletic ability; at 6’7, he is capable of playing both the 2 and 3

-Lefty gunner who can fill up the scoreboard; game is more suitable to a more uptempo system in the NBA

-Intangibles & upside; could be a perennial All-Star

K. Oubre Jr.

Weaknesses:

-Despite great physical traits, sometimes undisciplined on defense; gets lost in half-court sets; does not always have the right mentality or approach

-Needs to add a little strength; finishing ability leaves a lot to be desired unless it is a dunk and/or layup

-Level of aggression and intensity has to be better

D.O.G. Status: Kelly Oubre Jr. probably won’t light the world on fire in his rookie season. After pre-draft workouts and interviews, a top-10 selection is a real possibility. But until he gets stronger and develops a defensive identity, the D-League is calling his name.
