Sam Dekker’s run in the NCAA Tourney is vaulting him near the top of many teams’ draft boards. A lights out long distance threat, Dekker is a key reason why the Wisconsin Badgers upset top-seeded Kentucky in the Final Four and are in prime position to win it all. But besides his three-point shooting and clutch play, he brings many intangibles to the table, including toughness, and great leadership potential.
Dekker is a Swiss-army knife in the mold of both a young Caron Butler (in terms of scoring) and, current Dallas Mavericks forward, Chandler Parsons. He is still improving his ability to take players off the dribble but already possesses an advanced feel for the game. As a mid-late first round pick, Dekker could easily be the missing link for a team looking to shore up its rotation.
-Good athlete; very tough, heady player with a good nose for the ball
-Very effective outside shooter; comfortable spotting up in half-court sets, shooting in transition; never shies away from the big shot; smooth scorer
-Nice ball-handler, court vision
-Additional strength is needed to defend and absorb contact when driving to the rim
-Tweener (shooting guard/small forward)
-Has to work on creating offense off the bounce
D.O.G. Status: Dekker’s ceiling is a little limited considering his lack of defensive ability but there’s no reason why he cannot be a high quality rotation player on a very good team (similar to Parsons). Next year, expect an All-Rookie season.
